چکیده

The second and revised edition of this little book has now made its appearance. It is as the authors state intended for medical students, a class difficult to cater for as regards chemistry. At the present date the medical curriculum is as much as the student can assimilate and the demand on the specialist teacher to present his subject in a short and concise way is not easy. This book designed for Indian students, especially those of Calcutta and Patna, meets this need in large degree. The extensive use of graphical formulae is a great asset. It not only aids the memory but also brings before the eye the chemical relationships of the different substances met with in the living organism. The authors have picked out here and there substances of medical interest with a short note on their significance which should help to interest the student and above all make him realize the significance of chemistry in medicine. It should never be forgotten that the average medical student regards his pre-clinical studies as so much ground to be got over. The interested student with a knowledge of inorganic chemistry should be able to obtain the essentials with comparative ease from this book, which is well got up and can be confidently recommended.

Teaching biochemistry to medical students in Singapore--from organic chemistry to problem-based learning.

The medical faculty in the National University of Singapore started in 1905 but the Chair in Biochemistry was only established in 1927. For many years the biochemistry course consisted of the teaching of the organic chemistry of substances of physiological importance, nutrition, metabolism and hormones. In 1961, clinical biochemistry was introduced and in the 1980s, genetics and molecular biolo...

New “Green” Experiments for the Organic Chemistry Laboratories

1. Abstract: This project involves replacing a number of the currently used organic chemistry experiments with equally educational, yet more environmentally friendly experiments. Most of the fuels, materials, and medicines in our modern world have come about through advances in chemistry. Unfortunately, the production of these vital resources involves the formation of waste. However, new proces...

Premed survival: understanding the culling process in premedical undergraduate education.

PURPOSE Why undergraduate students pursue or drop a premedical curriculum has received only scant attention. In this study the authors attempted to uncover reasons why students either persevere in their premedical studies or seek alternative careers. METHOD Using convenience sampling, the authors surveyed 97 undergraduates at a small liberal arts college from November 2000 to March 2001. Of t...
